GPTZero vs Originality.ai: Which Detector Fits Your Use Case?

GPTZero and Originality.ai are usually the first two names anyone hears in AI detection, and they're routinely compared as if they were interchangeable. They aren't. One grew up in classrooms, the other in SEO agencies, and the right choice falls out of that history almost automatically. Quick disclosure before we start: we build AI Detector 360, a competing detector, so check our claims against the sources at the end.

Choose GPTZero if you're a student or educator who wants a real free tier and classroom features; choose Originality.ai if you run an SEO or publishing operation scanning content at scale. GPTZero gives you 10,000 free words a month. Originality.ai has no free text plan, but posted the strongest commercial score in the 2024 RAID benchmark.

Key takeaways

  • GPTZero has a genuine free tier (10,000 words/month); Originality.ai's cheapest way in is a $30 pay-as-you-go pack.
  • Originality.ai scored 85.0 at a 5% false-positive rate in RAID, the best commercial detector in that 2024 study.
  • GPTZero was acquired by Superhuman, Grammarly's parent, in June 2026 and keeps running as a standalone product.
  • Originality.ai's aggressive tuning is a known pain point for freelance writers whose human work gets flagged.

Pricing: monthly words vs expiring credits

GPTZero sells straightforward word quotas. Essential is $14.99 a month (about $8.33 a month billed annually) for 150,000 words; Premium is $23.99 monthly or $12.99 annual for 300,000 words; Professional is $45.99 monthly or $24.99 annual for 500,000 words. The free 10,000 words a month remain the real headline for light users.

Originality.ai runs on credits: one credit scans 100 words, so the $14.95 Pro plan's 2,000 monthly credits cover about 200,000 words of AI detection. Two gotchas hide in the fine print. Subscription credits expire at the end of each month, so unused capacity vanishes. And the $30 pay-as-you-go pack (3,000 credits) lasts two years, which quietly makes it the better deal for anyone who doesn't scan constantly. Enterprise plans start at $179 a month.

On raw price per word, Originality.ai edges ahead: roughly $0.07 per 1,000 words on Pro versus about $0.10 on GPTZero Essential, both billed monthly. If volume pricing is the deciding factor, though, it's worth widening the comparison; our roundup of free AI detectors covers the no-cost options, and our pricing page shows how we position against a market that spans roughly $0.02 to $0.68 per 1,000 words.

Accuracy: claims, benchmarks and false positives

GPTZero advertises 95.7% detection at a 1% false-positive rate. That number comes from GPTZero's own evaluation, and self-run tests always deserve skepticism, whoever publishes them (ours included).

Originality.ai has something rarer: a strong result in an independent academic benchmark. The RAID study (Dugan et al., ACL 2024) evaluated detectors across 10 million documents and 12 adversarial attacks, and Originality.ai scored 85.0 at a 5% false-positive rate, the best commercial detector tested. The same paper's sobering finding applies to both tools: every commercial detector degraded sharply under paraphrase and homoglyph attacks.

The flip side of Originality.ai's aggressive tuning shows up in the freelance world, where writers have publicly and repeatedly disputed human-written drafts it flagged as AI. High catch rates and high false-positive friction tend to travel together; that's the core trade-off we explain in how accurate AI detectors really are. Neither tool's score should ever be the sole basis for rejecting a writer's work or accusing a student.

Where each tool wins

GPTZero wins on:

  • A free tier you can actually live on for occasional checks
  • Education ecosystem: teacher dashboards, writing reports, classroom integrations
  • Institutional momentum, now backed by Superhuman's resources after the June 2026 acquisition

Originality.ai wins on:

  • The strongest independent benchmark result of any commercial tool in RAID's 2024 evaluation
  • Publisher workflow: plagiarism checking, readability, full-site scans, team seats
  • Language coverage (about 30 versus GPTZero's 5–9) and slightly cheaper per-word pricing

Where AI Detector 360 fits

This is our tool, so weigh accordingly. We compete on three things these two don't offer together: coverage beyond text (images at 5 credits, video at 25 with a frame-by-frame timeline), provenance checks like C2PA metadata inspection, and explicit confidence levels on every score instead of a lone percentage. Our Starter plan is $9.99 for 4,000 credits, about 400,000 words. Where they beat us: GPTZero's classroom ecosystem is far deeper than ours, and Originality.ai's site-scanning and plagiarism suite is built for publishing operations in a way our scanner isn't trying to be. The verdict

Pick by identity, not by advertised accuracy. Students and teachers get more from GPTZero's free tier and education features. Agencies and publishers scanning freelance content at volume get more from Originality.ai's credits, site scans and benchmark pedigree, as long as they treat flags as prompts for review rather than verdicts. And if your work involves suspicious images or video, not just prose, that's the gap we built AI Detector 360 to fill.

Whichever you choose, re-check the pricing pages before you subscribe. Both companies have changed plans multiple times, and this space moves fast.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPTZero or Originality.ai more accurate?

There's no clean winner. In the 2024 RAID benchmark, Originality.ai posted the best score of any commercial detector tested, 85.0 at a 5% false-positive rate. GPTZero claims 95.7% detection at a 1% false-positive rate, but that figure is self-reported. Both degrade on paraphrased text, and both produce false positives.

Does Originality.ai have a free plan?

Not for text. Originality.ai's cheapest entry is a $30 pay-as-you-go pack of 3,000 credits that lasts two years, or the Pro subscription at $14.95 a month. It does offer a free AI image checker on its site.

Who owns GPTZero now?

Superhuman, the company formed when Grammarly acquired the Superhuman email app and took its name, announced its acquisition of GPTZero in June 2026. GPTZero had about 19 million registered users at the time and continues to operate as a standalone product.

Which detector is better for students?

GPTZero, in most cases. Its free 10,000 words per month cover typical essay pre-checks, and its whole ecosystem is built around education. Originality.ai is designed for publishers and agencies, is tuned aggressively, and its credits expire monthly on subscription plans.
